Yes, Da Vinci did the Mona Lisa first … but he didn’t create it from 3604 cups of coffee, which is why our version made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Conceived as an activation for The Rocks Aroma Festival, we worked closely with event sponsors to painstakingly recreate the iconic portrait in a range of coffee tones from flat whites to long blacks. The public were encouraged to participate in the creation of the work.
Used as an online promotional device for the event, the movie of the construction of the piece attracted an unprecedented 100,000 You Tube hits in its first week. It also received widespread international publicity for the event. A coffee-buzz if ever there was one.
Following the success of the Mona Lisa, we were asked to reprise the concept of the coffee portrait and this time we moved off the canvas and onto the silver screen, creating Marilyn Monroe in over 5000 cups. Always looking to go bigger and better, we moved up a cup size and beat our own world record.
After a two-year hiatus (time enough for the caffeine to leave our systems) we created our third and final coffee portrait. After featuring two of the most famous female icons in history we asked ourselves; who is more enigmatic than the Mona Lisa? Who is more famous for her sex appeal than Marilyn Monroe? Well, it could only be the one and only, Dame Edna Everage. The grand old dame was created using 8000 cups of coffee. Phew! That’s a lot of coffee and a new world record possums!
